bike life

It has been 3 weeks since I got the bike. VFR800 ABS. It’s been the one I liked the most since I first got my license. I got it new (08) because it was a sweet deal (compared to an 06 used). The bike is on the heavy side for sport bikes. 500+ lbs. It’s underpower below 6000 rpm, but it’s great because it gives some buffer if mis-throttled.
Practicing at night has helped me a lot getting used to the bike and speed. The breakthrough I got is I got to understand the relationship of leaning and speed. To make a tight turns, the bike has to lean and the centrifugal force keeps the bike from falling. So it needs speed/torque. As I start leaning to make a tight turn, I let go of the clutch to generate the centrifugal force. Once I understand what’s going on, I’m not afraid of dropping the bike anymore. Now it’s a matter of practicing more to make tighter and tighter turns (lock to lock).
Going on highway at night also helps getting over the fear of speed. When I started out at local street, I thought 30 mph was scary enough. My comfort zone was like 25, but I know it won’t be enough out there. As the nights go by, I became comfortable about 40. Then I had to leave the bike at the dealer for lojack installation. I concluded the highway was the safer and faster route. I decided to drop it off the night before when there was little traffic. First at 65 and I stayed at 70. Realized at higher speed, it takes more push to make the bike lean. 5 mins. I exited and also got over the speed fear. When I picked it up, I went on the highway without a second thought. It’s just safer than local streets, even at night.
Now I am at 66 miles on the bike. At this point I have dealt with some light local traffic. Nothing rush hours bumper to bumper. But I have and will continue to take my time. It’s like when I got my first manual car.
It’s a great bike and I’d do everything to enjoy the gift of riding.
